The process of bringing a family member to live in the UAE takes place in two steps:

Obtaining an entry permit for the sponsored from the General Administration of Residency and Foreigners Affairs in Abu Dhabi.
Obtaining his residence visa without work, which allows the sponsored person to reside legally within the country.
Family members of Emirati citizens

Citizens can sponsor family members from:

The foreign wife.
Parents.
Children of female citizens.
Special conditions
The wife: In the event of sponsoring a non-Arab wife, the marriage contract must be attached, duly certified and translated by a sworn translator.
Father and mother: In the case of the father and mother’s sponsorship, an original and a copy of the maintenance certificate issued by the court must be submitted, proving that the sponsor is the only breadwinner for them in the country.
Children: In the case of female citizens sponsoring their non-citizen children, an original and a copy of a birth certificate attested by the sponsored embassy and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs must be submitted.
Family members of Gulf Cooperation Council citizens
To sponsor a foreign wife, the wife must obtain a valid residency permit from the sponsor’s home. The marriage contract must be duly legalized and translated by a sworn translator, if the wife is of a non-Arab nationality.

Sponsorship of the resident’s family

A resident who holds valid residency as an employee or investor in the state may sponsor his family members from:

the wife.
Children under the age of 18 years.
Unmarried girls.
Parents.

It is required that the sponsor be the sole breadwinner for his parents. It should be noted that the category of workers, domestic workers and the like cannot sponsor their relatives.

It is noteworthy that the law limits the resident’s sponsorship for his children to male sons who are under the age of 18 and unmarried girls after submitting a case declaration proving that females over 18 are unmarried. The father is allowed to guarantee residency for children in the event that they pursue studies after the age of 18 and until they reach the age of 21, whether in the UAE or abroad, after submitting a certificate of continuity of study in one of the universities recognized by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research.

Residents working in the public and private sectors, who wish to sponsor their spouses and children, must obtain a monthly salary of not less than 4000 dirhams or 3000 dirhams with family housing provided by his employer. Teachers, imams, and bus drivers of schools, universities, colleges and other educational institutions are exempt from this requirement.

If the resident is new to Abu Dhabi, he must first obtain residency for himself before proceeding with the residency procedures for his family.

The required documents

  • The original marriage contract duly attested for the wife, bearing in mind that in the case of the wife’s sponsorship of non-Arab nationalities, the original marriage contract must be duly certified and translated by a sworn translator. In order to sponsor the second wife, the resident needs to submit a financial guarantee of 5,000 dirhams.
  • Attested birth certificate for children.
  • Add newborn to residence.

Residents can add their newborn children to their residency, and procedures include submitting an addition application form with a copy of the birth certificate for children born inside the country within 120 days from the date of birth.

Procedures for obtaining residency without work

  • The entry permit allows its holder to enter the country within 60 days from the date of its issuance, as the permit is sent to the sponsored person outside the country or deposited in the visa office at the airport to collect it upon arrival.
  • The sponsor then applies to the General Administration of Residency and Foreigners Affairs to extract residency for the sponsored person from the General Administration of Residency and Foreigners Affairs – Abu Dhabi, within a maximum period of 30 days from the date of arrival.
  • The procedures for obtaining the residency without work begins with the sponsored obtaining a health fitness certificate after undergoing a mandatory health examination for the wife and children over the age of 18.
  • With the exception of children of female citizens, issuing residency to family members requires attaching a copy of the health insurance card or registration receipt with the other required documents
  • It should be noted that the residency must be renewed when it expires, noting that staying outside the country for a period of more than 6 months cancels the residency automatically.
